A Sensor is a device that detects events or changes in quantities and provides a corresponding output, generally as an electrical or optical signal; for example, a Thermocouple converts temperature to an output voltage. But a Mercury-in-glass Thermometer is also a sensor; it converts the measured temperature into expansion and contraction of a liquid which can be read on a Calibrated Glass Tube.

INTRODUCTIONThe Basic Flex Sensor Circuit is a single sided operational amplifier, used with these sensors because the low bias current of the op amp reduces error due to source impedance of the flex sensor as voltage divider. Flex also called bend sensors, measure the amount of deflection caused by bending the sensor. A typical bend sensor has the following basic specifications:• uni- vs. bi-directional sensing• uni- vs. bi-polar sensing• range of resistance (nominal to full-deflection)Range of deflection: Determines the maximum angle of deflection that can be measured (as opposed to the maximum angle the sensor can be bent).Uni- vs. bi-directional sensing: Some flexion sensors increase the resistance when bent in either of two opposing directions, however there is no difference in the measurement with respect to the direction.Uni- vs. bi-polar sensing: A bi-polar flexion sensor measures deflection in two opposing directions yielding different measurementsRange of resistance: Bend sensors can vary largely (even the same product) in terms of their range of resistance, measured as the difference from nominal resistance to resistance at full deflection.

Introduction:
Water Level sensors detect the level of liquids and other fluids and fluidized solids, including slurries, granular materials, and powders that exhibit an upper free surface. Substances that flow become essentially horizontal in their containers (or other physical boundaries) because of gravity whereas most bulk solids pile at an angle of repose to a peak. The substance to be measured can be inside a container or can be in its natural form (e.g., a river or a lake). The level measurement can be either continuous or point values. Continuous level sensors measure level within a specified range and determine the exact amount of substance in a certain place, while point-level sensors only indicate whether the substance is above or below the sensing point. Generally the latter detect levels that are excessively high or low.

Melexis MLX90615 Digital Plug & Play Infrared Thermometer in an Ultra Small TO-can is an Infra Red thermometer for non-contact temperature measurements. The MLX90615 integrates both the IR sensitive thermopile detector chip and the signal conditioning ASIC in the same miniature TO-46 can. Its ultra small size makes it extremely well suited for medical applications like ear thermometers or other applications where "small things make a big difference". The thermometer comes factory calibrated with a digital SMBus output giving full access to the measured temperature in the complete temperature range(s) with a resolution of 0.02°C. The user can configure the digital output to be PWM.

The most prominent application for infrared thermometers, from Melexis, is measuring body temperature to check for fever and illness. There are three main types of IR fever thermometers: ear thermometers, forehead thermometers, and non-contact, distance-read thermometers. Measurement accuracy depends on the calibration accuracy of the thermometer and how accurately the temperature measured on the patient's exterior can be translated into an internal body temperature. For most medical applications, a measurement accuracy of ±0.2°C or better is required.

 

The MLX90615 from Melexis is the world's first intelligent infrared thermometer integrated into the ultra small TO-46 package commonly used in the manufacture of ear thermometers. This ultra-small and cost effective, non-contact thermometer delivers a fully calibrated digital temperature reading achieved by integrating an infrared sensor with a custom signal conditioning chip in a TO-46 package.

 

The sensing element in the MLX90615 is a silicon chip with a thin, micro-machined membrane heated by the infrared radiation of the object. This proven Melexis technology has been applied to industrial and automotive temperature measurement challenges for many years. A custom built signal conditioning chip amplifies and digitizes the minute voltages generated by the thermocouples on the sensor membrane and calculates the object temperature using factory set calibration parameters stored in the memory of the chip. The digitized temperature is fully linearized and compensates for ambient temperature. This high level of integration makes the MLX90615 very cost effective compared with previous infrared solutions.

    INTRODUCTION
    Force Sensitive Resistors are two wire devices. They are robust polymer thick film sensors that exhibit a decrease in resistance with Increase in pressure applied to the surface of the sensor.     INTRODUCTION Basic Idea is to send infrared light through IR LEDs which is then reflected by any object in front of sensor. One of the biggest problems that can cause the malfunctioning of an IR proximity sensor, is the ambient light and surrounding sources of IR like the sun and halogen lamps that can cause false triggering of the sensor due to emission of infrared light. To avoid getting false detection the solution is to send pulses of IR light at a certain frequency instead of a constant beam, and build a receiver that would only detect IR pulses of the same exact frequency, cutting of all pulses of higher or lower frequency. The kind of device capable of filtering signals this way is called a band pass filter.There are a lot of types of band pass filters, a whole branch of electricity is dedicated to this subject. The central frequency is fixed by the constructor usually at 1 khz. IR receiver filters all the source of light except the 1Khz IR signal. It all starts by generating the 1 Khz pulses of electricity that are fed to an IR LED, emitting 1Khz pulses of Infra-Red light. A weaker signal but with the same frequency is reflected from an eventual obstacle to the IR receiver, it passes through the IR-PASS filter, which will eliminate other sources of light which are not IR (visible light). The IR-PASS filter still detects a lot of noise due to other sources of IR light like the sun for example, so the signals received by the diode are fed to another stage composed of an active filter to select the 1Khz IR signals among all others, amplify it and demodulate it, providing a clean logic output (5 or 0 volts).

In most cases, a microsensor reaches a significantly higher speed and sensitivity compared with macroscopic approaches.

     The flexible component comprising a 28 μm thick piezoelectric PVDF polymer film with screen-printed Ag-ink electrodes, laminated to a 0.125 mm polyester substrate, and fitted with two crimped contacts.- As the piezo film is displaced from the mechanical neutral axis, bending creates very high strain within the piezopolymer and therefore high voltages are generated. When the assembly is deflected by direct contact, the device acts as a flexible "switch", and the generated output is sufficient to trigger MOSFET or CMOS stages directly. If the assembly is supported by its contacts and left to vibrate "in free space" (with the inertia of the clamped/free beam creating bending stress), the device will behave as an accelerometer or vibration sensor. Adding mass, or altering the free length of the element by clamping, can change the resonant frequency and sensitivity of the sensor to suit specific applications. Multi-axis response can be achieved by positioning the mass off center. The vibration sensor where the sensing element comprises a cantilever beam loaded by an additional mass to offer high sensitivity at low frequencies.

    The 3-Axis Accelerometer consists of three –5 to +5 g accelerometers mounted in one small block. Using the appropriate data collection hardware and software, you can graph any of these components, or calculate the magnitude of the net acceleration. The 3-Axis Accelerometer can be used for a wide variety of experiments and demonstrations, both inside the lab and outside. The Accelerometer is a small, thin, low power, complete 3-axis accelerometer with signal conditioned voltage outputs. The product measures acceleration with a minimum full-scale range of ±3 g. It can measure the static acceleration of gravity in tilt-sensing applications, as well as dynamic acceleration resulting from motion, shock, or vibration. The user selects the bandwidth of the accelerometer using the CX, CY, and CZ capacitors at the XOUT, YOUT, and ZOUT pins. Bandwidths can be selected to suit the application, with a range of 0.5 Hz to 1600 Hz for the X and Y axes, and a range of 0.5 Hz to 550 Hz for the Z axis.

    A laser diode is a semiconductor that uses a p-n junction for producing coherent radiation with the same frequency and phase which is either in the visible or infrared spectrum. It is also called an injection laser diode and the technology is similar to that found in LEDs. A laser diode is a semiconductor device similar to a light-emitting diode in which a diode pumped directly with electrical current can create lasing conditions at the diode's junction. Driven by voltage, the doped p–n-transition allows for recombination of an electron with a hole.Laser diodes are used in a very wide range of applications. The following list gives some important examples:Low-power single-mode LDs with high beam quality are used for data recording and reading on CD-ROMs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and holographic data storage media.
